A striking mechanical instrument that demonstrates the effects of centrifugal force.
It can be mounted in two ways.

  • The glass sphere, filled with water containing a few drops of coloured turpentine, rotates on a horizontal axis. The turpentine is less dense than water and separates into small globules due to the centrifugal force; these form a cylindrical shape around the axis.
  • The sphere is inserted in a brass ring and rotated simultaneously around two perpendicular axes, allowing the effects of the two combined motions to be investigated
